If you’re getting your power from Momentum you’re also supporting our parent company Hydro Tasmania – which is good news when it comes to backing Aussie renewables.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t get even greener with your power spend.
GreenPower is a government program where your power company buys renewable energy on your behalf. Contributing is really straightforward: once you’ve signed up, your GreenPower charge is added directly onto your power bill.
That money goes towards new Aussie renewable projects, which in turn means more renewable energy goes into the grid. The whole program is also government accredited, so you know your money’s going to the right places.
In short: GreenPower takes out the hard work, and the guesswork, when it comes to backing Aussie renewables.
When an eligible renewable energy generator makes a certain amount of energy, they get a Large-scale Generation Certificate (LGC). They’re like the ‘rights’ to that amount of energy. Power companies can buy these certificates and surrender them to the Clean Energy Regulator, which is effectively like saying ‘we bought that renewable energy, and used it.’ Surrendering a certificate means it can’t be used again.
Power companies buy as many LGCs as it takes to cover the amount of GreenPower their customers buy. This incentivises renewable energy generation by creating a demand for those certificates.
Because everyone’s budget is different, you can tailor the amount of GreenPower you add to your power spend. You do this by choosing a percentage of your usage – either 10%, 20%, 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% – to add on top of your bill, at the GreenPower rate.
Whatever percentage you choose, that’s how much of your energy use you’re offsetting with renewable energy.
Slow down. What’s the GreenPower rate? That’s the amount you’re charged for GreenPower, which is set by your power company and shown as part of the sign-up process. It’s usually no more than 8¢ per kWh.
The amount you spend on GreenPower depends on three things:
Say you use 100kWh of energy in a month and your GreenPower rate is 5¢, this is what you’d pay that month (in addition to your normal spend):
Your GreenPower contribution will be a separate line on your bill.
If you want to support new renewable projects and reduce your impact on the environment, GreenPower is a good way to do it. That’s because any money that you put towards GreenPower goes towards (and encourages more) new renewable energy generation.
It also meets the National Carbon Offset Standard, which means that depending on how much GreenPower you choose to buy, your home or business can claim that it has offset some (or all) of its electricity use with renewable energy.
You can add GreenPower when you’re signing up to your electricity plan as long as it's offered by the power company.
If you’re already with Momentum and want to get GreenPower, you'll need to do a plan switch through MyAccount. Log in and click ‘Switch plan’ in the box with your electricity account information. Once you’ve selected a plan, you’ll get the option to add GreenPower too.
