When it comes to net zero, we think the best place to start is lowering emissions – not just buying offsets to make up for them.
We’re owned by Hydro Tasmania, Australia’s largest renewable generator. They also own Entura, who own, operate, and consult on renewable projects around the world – in short, we’re part of an organisation committed to making emissions-free electricity.
The combined Scope 1 and 2 emissions of Momentum Energy and our parent company, Hydro Tasmania, were less than .4% of those of the energy industry’s biggest carbon emitter.^
Our customers get their electricity from the grid, which comes from both renewable and non-renewable sources. But every year our parent company, Hydro Tasmania, adds roughly double what they use back in from hydropower alone.
For us, the most important part of going net-zero is reducing Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions – no matter what business you’re in. This means fewer emissions to begin with, and more opportunity to invest in really valuable offset programs.
While we’re still nutting out the details, our priority for picking an offset partner will be verifying that they do what they say on the tin. Because we want to be sure that we support a program that adds more value to carbon-combatting efforts, rather than laying claim to things that already exist, or would have happened without us.
